Border Woodturners Open Day Inter-Club Competition, 19th October 2025
Winners: Northumbrian Woodturners Association
The inter-club competition saw 7 clubs taking part; Brampton, Eden valley, Scottish Borders, West Cumbria, Cumbria, Durham Woodturners and our self. Each club had to submit 3 pieces of turned work. The work submitted from NWA were by Norman Cain, Jim Towers & Mick Johns (refer to the first photograph below). They turned out to be the winning entries - well done to our club members and to all other entrants from the other clubs. The second photograph shows Malcolm Ferguson presenting the trophy to Norman Cain on behalf of NWA.

British Woodturner of the Year winner 8 - 19 May 2019
Congratulations to Nick Simpson who won the Amateur Turner of the Year award for his Steampunk-inspired piece, Breakfast with the Alchemist and to Jim Towers whose Trumpet gained a highly commended accolade.
The competition was run by GMC Publications and the Woodworkers Institute in association with Axminster Tools and Machinery.

Joint Meeting with the Royal Forestry Society North Eastern Division 13th May 2017
NWA members Nick Simpson, Chris Tait and Walter Vasey and guest Richard Ferguson from Hexhamshire Hardwoods hosted 11 members of the RFS. Richard talked in a Q & A session about the selection and processing of timber from tree to turner. Chris and Walter demonstrated the differences between green and kiln dried woods by turning a bowl each and Nick followed by turning a thin goblet from green branchwood. There was lively discussion.
